The Senate
The Senate works alongside the House of Representatives to create laws for the peace, order, and good governance of Nigeria.
About the Senate
Nigeria operates a three-level system of government: Federal, State, and Local Governments. At the Federal level, the legislative branch is called the National Assembly, made up of two chambers:
the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The Senate, often referred to as The Red Chamber, is the upper chamber of the National Assembly and plays a critical role in Nigeria’s law-making and governance, Nigeria is currently in the 10th Assembly.
What the Senate Does
The Senate works with the House of Representatives to make laws for the peace, order, and good governance of Nigeria. Also approves appointments and oversees government ministries.
Senate Representation
The Senate is made up of 109 Senators. Each state is represented by three Senators, while the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, is represented by one Senator.
Leaders of the Senate
Members elect a Senate President and a Deputy Senate President to lead the Senate. Supported by Principal Officers from both the Majority & Minority parties, along with the Clerk of the Senate who manages administrative functions.
Standing Committees
The Senate manages its work through Standing Committees that focus on key areas like health, education, defense, and finance, helping to review bills, investigate issues, and oversee government activities.

Senator Godswill Akpabio - Senate President
Godswill Akpabio is a seasoned Nigerian politician and lawyer. Born on December 9, 1962, in Akwa Ibom State, he has held several key positions in government.
He was the Governor of Akwa Ibom State from 2007 to 2015, where he was known for his infrastructural development initiatives. Akpabio later served as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs from 2019 to 2022 before returning to the Senate.
He was elected Senate President on June 13, 2023, leading the 10th Senate.

Senator Jibrin Barau Deputy Senate President
Barau Jibrin, born on June 19, 1959, is a Nigerian politician from Kano State. He holds multiple degrees, including a bachelor’s degree in accounting and an MBA.
His political career began in 1999, when he was elected to the House of Representatives. He later became a Senator for Kano North in 2015 and was re-elected in 2023.
Jibrin has served in various legislative committees, including Appropriations and Petroleum.

Michael Opeyemi Bamidele is a Nigerian lawyer, activist, and politician born on July 29, 1963, in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.
A trained lawyer, he has served in various political roles, including Commissioner in Lagos State, House of Representatives member, and now Senator for Ekiti Central. He is currently the Majority Leader of the Nigerian Senate, advocating for good governance and youth empowerment.

Lola Ashiru was born on 14 June 1955, in Offa, Kwara State, Nigeria. He attended Iyeru okin primary school, Offa, before proceeding to Esie Iludun Anglican Grammar School in 1968.
He completed his secondary education at Federal Government College, Sokoto, in 1974, and later studied environmental design and architecture at the University of Lagos where he graduated in 1980. He is a Nigerian architect and politician, who was elected as a senator to represent Kwara South Senatorial District in the 9th Senate.
He is the Chief Executive Officer of Capital Projects Limited, a real estate firm, with branches in Lagos, Abuja and other West African countries.

Mohammed Tahir Monguno was born on 12 February 1966. He had his primary education in Monguno Central Primary School and later attended Government Secondary School (GSS) Ngala, Borno State where he obtained his Senior School Certificate.
He studied law at the University of Maiduguri where he graduated in 1989. He attended Nigerian Law School and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1990. In 1992, Monguno contested and was elected as a member of the House at the age of 26. is a Nigerian lawyer and politician who is the chief whip of the 10th Senate. He has served as the senator representing Borno North Senatorial District since 2023. He was a member of the House of Representatives of Nigeria representing Marte/Monguno/Nganzai Federal Constituency of Borno State from 2007 to 2023, and served as the chief Whip of the 9th House of Representatives.

Onyekachi Nwaebonyi was born on October 27, 1982 is a Nigerian politician serving as senator for Ebonyi North Central since 2023.
A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he currently holds the position of Deputy Chief Whip in the Senate. Nwaebonyi studied law and built his career through active involvement in Ebonyi State politics before rising to national prominence.
Known for advocating infrastructure and youth empowerment, he’s become a visible figure in Nigeria’s 10th National Assembly.

Patrick Abba Moro is a Nigerian politician and former Minister of the Interior, born on July 3, 1956, in Benue State.
He previously worked as a lecturer before transitioning into politics, serving as Chairman of Okpokwu Local Government Council. In 2019, he was elected Senator representing Benue South, advocating for development and governance reforms.

Lere Oyewumi was born January 5, 1960, is a Nigerian senator representing Osun West since 2023 under the PDP.
An educator and community development expert, he holds a bachelor’s in geography from Obafemi Awolowo University, a master’s in community development, and a PhD from the University of Ibadan. He previously served in the House of Representatives, as Chairman of Irewole Local Government, and as a National Population Commissioner.

Osita Ngwu, known as RG, was born on February 2, 1978. Osita Ngwu holds a Bachelor of Engineering from Enugu State University of Science and Technology in 2001.
He obtained a Masters of Business Administration MBA at University Roehampton, London, Business School in 2016. He is a member of various professional bodies, Nigerian Society of Engineers NSE, Nigerian Mechanical Engineers Association NMEA and Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria COREN.
He represents Enugu West under the PDP and has served in the Senate since 2023.
Before politics, he built a successful career in the oil and gas sector and now chairs the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals.

Rufai Hanga was born on August 18, 1954, in Kano State, is a seasoned Nigerian politician and accountant. He currently serves as the Senator representing Kano Central under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), a position he assumed in June 2023.
Hanga began his political journey in 1979 with the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1992. He also served as a Senator from 2003 to 2007, and was the founding national chairman of the now-defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).
A graduate of accountancy, Hanga has over 30 years of experience in public service. He currently holds the role of Deputy Minority Whip in the Senate and is known for his legislative experience, grassroots connection, and commitment to progressive politics
