About the House of Representatives
Nigeria operates a three-tier system of government: The Federal, State, and Local Governments, each with its own legislative arm.
At the federal level, Nigeria practices a bicameral legislature known as the National Assembly, which is divided into two chambers: the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The National Assembly serves as the nation’s apex law-making body.
The House of Representatives chambers is often referred to as ‘The Green Chamber‘, Nigeria is currently in the 10th Assembly.
Functions of Representatives
The House of Representatives, together with the Senate, is responsible for creating laws that support peace, good governance, and national development.
Membership
The House of Representatives is made up of 360 members. Each member represents a part of the country, known as a federal constituency. Members serve a fixed term of four years, and they may be re-elected.
Representative Leadership
Members elect a Speaker and a Deputy Speaker from among themselves to lead the House. Supported by the Clerk & Deputy Clerk of the House, as well as other Principal Officers, from both the Majority and Minority groups.
