National Assembly Library Engages Senate Committee on NASENI for Research Collaboration

As part of the National Assembly Library’s ongoing efforts to enhance stakeholder engagement and facilitate evidence-based policy-making, the Senate Liaison Unit of the Library paid a courtesy visit to Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI).

The visit provided an opportunity for a detailed introduction to the Library and the services of its Resource Center and Research Department. Discussions centered on strengthening collaboration to promote legislative excellence, enhance civic engagement, and supporting legislators through research, policy analysis, and evaluation.

The meeting also covered key legislative and institutional matters, including NASENI’s organizational track record, the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Bill, 2021—which criminalizes ransom payments to kidnappers—and the State Police Bill. Senator Onyewuchi shared insights on Nigeria’s political and economic trajectory, commending legislators for their impactful bills and emphasizing the need for robust implementation policies.

He reaffirmed his support for the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Bill, underscoring the importance of preventing the financial empowerment of kidnappers and terrorists. On the State Police Bill, he described it as a vital step toward addressing Nigeria’s security challenges and called for the adoption of sophisticated weaponry. The Senator also highlighted ongoing collaborations between NASENI and the Department of State Services (DSS) in manufacturing advanced security hardware, as well as NASENI’s broader contributions to technology development, industrialization, job creation, and research innovation.

The meeting concluded with the establishment of a collaborative framework between Senator Onyewuchi and the National Assembly Library’s Research Department. The Senator directed his aide to maintain active engagement with the Library and explore cooperation in legislative drafting, bill development, and policy analysis. He expressed appreciation for the visit and extended an open invitation for continued interactions and future visits to NASENI.
