President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a formal call for peace and decorum as citizens in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Rivers, and Kano states prepare to head to the polls this Saturday.
In a statement released on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President emphasized that democracy can only flourish in an atmosphere of mutual respect, tolerance, and stability. He urged all eligible voters to exercise their fundamental right to vote without fear of intimidation, while reminding political actors that the strength of the nation’s democratic process relies on their commitment to non-violence.
The President encouraged voters to turn out in large numbers, stressing that an orderly electoral process is vital for the legitimacy of local leadership.
Law enforcement agencies have been directed to ensure a secure environment for all participants. Specifically, a 12-hour movement restriction has been implemented in the FCT to facilitate a hitch-free exercise.
President Tinubu called on candidates and party supporters to prioritize the national interest over partisan gains, urging them to accept the will of the people as expressed at the ballot box.
“Democracy thrives when we prioritize peace over provocation,” the statement noted. “The eyes of the nation are on these key areas, and it is my hope that this exercise serves as a testament to our maturing democratic culture.”
The President also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for their preparations, urging them to maintain the highest standards of neutrality and professionalism throughout the voting and collation processes.
