Senate President Akpabio Tours National Assembly Library, Reaffirms Commitment to Knowledge-Driven Legislation

Wednesday, January 14, 2026 | The National Assembly Library received the President of the Senate, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, who paid an official tour of the Library in the company of serving senators. The visit underscores the renewed emphasis of the leadership of the National Assembly on strengthening institutional support systems that enhance effective lawmaking and legislative oversight.

The Senate President was formally welcomed by the Executive Secretary of the National Assembly Library, Rt Hon Henry Nwawuba, alongside team members of the Library. Rt Hon Nwawuba expressed appreciation for the visit, describing it as a strong demonstration of the Senate leadership’s recognition of the Library as a critical pillar of the legislative process.

During the guided tour, Senator Akpabio and his delegation inspected key sections of the Library, including its archival collections, artifacts and digital resources. The visit provided an opportunity for engagement on ongoing reforms, modernization efforts, and plans to further expand access to credible legislative research materials for lawmakers.

The Senate President commended the management and staff of the National Assembly Library for their professionalism and dedication to duty. He emphasized the indispensable role of a functional and well-resourced legislative library in promoting informed debates, quality legislation, and evidence-based decision-making within the National Assembly.

During the engagement, the Senate President emphasized the importance of accurate history and responsible storytelling, noting that the way a nation preserves and presents its past plays a critical role in shaping national identity and collective memory. He spent considerable time reflecting on the history of Nigeria, drawing attention to key inflection points that have defined the country’s political and democratic evolution. He further stressed that these defining moments should be carefully illustrated and preserved in the National Assembly Library Museum as vital reference points for education, reflection, and national consciousness.

The visit concluded with interactive discussions between the senators and Library officials on strategies to further strengthen the Library’s capacity in line with global best practices.
