The Federal Government has taken a major step toward modernizing the nation’s spatial infrastructure with the National Addressing Council (NAC) ratifying a preliminary framework to establish a fully digitized addressing system for Nigeria.
The council reached the decision on Monday during a high-level meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The session brought together key government agencies alongside public and private sector stakeholders.
According to a statement issued Tuesday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), the initiative is designed to create a unified system capable of supporting national security, administrative governance, commercial growth, and social service delivery nationwide.
“An accurate and modern addressing system is essential for driving digital economy goals, enhancing emergency response, and streamlining delivery services across all sectors,” Shettima noted during the meeting.
To streamline implementation, the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation has been designated as the official secretariat of the council. Under this structure, the ministry will lead inter-agency coordination to ensure seamless execution across all tiers of government.
