On Tuesday 28th October 2025, Hon. Thomas Ereyitomi highlighted the critical need for connecting Ode-Itsekiri, located in the Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, to the National Electricity Grid.
Ode-Itsekiri, known as the ancestral homeland of the Itsekiri people and one of the first autonomous communities in Delta State, is situated close to Warri City. Despite its historical significance and proximity to a major urban area, many residents and businesses in Ode-Itsekiri continue to rely on inefficient diesel generators for power. This reliance not only carries high operational costs but also poses environmental risks and hinders local economic activities.
The community has received limited attention in terms of rural electrification efforts, with the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) only managing to rehabilitate and extend existing electricity infrastructures. Unfortunately, current conditions leave Ode-Itsekiri without a direct connection to the National Electricity Grid, which has stunted overall development and growth within the area. Residents have expressed feelings of neglect and marginalization, particularly in light of their community’s status as a significant oil-producing region.
Recognizing the urgent need for change, the House has resolved to urge the Federal Ministry of Power to prioritize the connection of Ode-Itsekiri to the National Grid. This initiative is expected to provide residents with access to clean, safe, and reliable energy, thereby enhancing socio-economic activities and improving the quality of life for the local population. Furthermore, the Committee on Power has been tasked with ensuring compliance and oversight of this essential development effort.
As discussions continue, the need for immediate action to address the electricity deficit in Ode-Itsekiri remains paramount, emphasizing the government’s responsibility to support all regions equally.
