Hon. Saidu Yusuf Miga Leads Charge to Restore Aujara State Constituency

On Wednesday, 29th October 2025, Hon. Saidu Yusuf Miga moved a motion for the Restoration of Aujara State Constituency of Jigawa State House of Assembly

The resolution comes in the wake of historical and constitutional considerations regarding constituency representation in the state.

Historically, prior to the creation of Jigawa State from Kano State, Aujara co-existed alongside Jahun and Miga State Constituencies during the Second Republic. However, the constituency faced suppression during the most recent electoral review by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 1998. This suppression, the assembly argues, undermined adequate representation for the people of Aujara in the Jigawa State House of Assembly.

In 2004, INEC had also recommended the restoration of suppressed constituencies to the National Assembly. The current assembly members, acknowledging this historical context, pointed to Section 114 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which mandates a periodic review of state constituencies every ten years. This provision allows for alterations deemed necessary based on such reviews.

To address these issues, the House of Representatives resolved:

  1. Approval of the restoration of the Aujara State Constituency.
  2. An urgent call to INEC to act on this restoration in compliance with current laws and the provisions of Sections 91 and 112 of the Constitution.
  3. A request for the Senate’s concurrence, as outlined in Section 115 of the Constitution, to facilitate this restoration.
  4. A mandate to the Committees on Electoral Matters and Legislative Compliance to oversee compliance and implementation of the resolution.

With this resolution, the House of Representatives aims to ensure that the voices of the Aujara constituency are adequately represented, thus reinforcing democratic governance and participation in the region.
