House of Representatives Extends 2025 Capital Budget Implementation to June 2026

The House of Representatives has officially extended the implementation period for the capital expenditure component of the 2025 Appropriation Act. Initially set to expire earlier, the deadline for the execution of capital projects has now been moved to June 30, 2026.

The decision followed a legislative process aimed at ensuring that critical infrastructure projects and developmental initiatives captured in the 2025 budget are fully funded and completed. By extending the life of the capital budget, lawmakers intend to prevent the stalling of projects due to the rigid expiration of the fiscal year, allowing the executive arm more time to utilize allocated funds effectively.

Parliamentary observers note that this extension is a strategic move to address delays in procurement processes and ensure that the government delivers on its promised “Renewed Hope” infrastructure milestones. The shift provides a safety net for ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to continue disbursements for ongoing contracts without the risk of funds being mopped up by the treasury prematurely.

The extension is expected to provide much-needed stability for the construction and technology sectors, which rely heavily on consistent government capital releases. With the new deadline of mid-2026, the federal government now has an expanded window to close the infrastructure gap and stimulate economic growth through targeted spending.

The resolution has been forwarded for administrative processing to ensure that the financial timelines of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation are aligned with the new June 2026 cutoff.
