The House of Representatives released a communique on interfaith harmony following a two-day Legislative Roundtable on Interfaith Dialogue held at the Abuja Continental Hotel from July 28-29, 2025. This event was organized by the Office of the Speaker in partnership with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) and the National Assembly Library Trust Fund (NALTF).
The roundtable aimed to enhance legislative and institutional responses to issues such as religious intolerance, hate speech, identity-based violence, and social division in Nigeria. Participants included lawmakers, religious leaders, traditional authorities, academics, women’s and youth leaders, security institutions, civil society organizations, and international development partners, focusing on collaboration to foster religious harmony, social cohesion, and national unity.
The event featured presentations and panel discussions that provided lawmakers with strategies to combat hate speech and protect the freedom of religious belief.
The communique forms the basis for a comprehensive institutional and legal framework designed to address religious intolerance and sectarian violence.
