NALTF Executive Secretary Welcomes Speaker, House Committee on Sports for Flag-Off of National Grassroots Sports Development Initiative

The Executive Secretary of the National Assembly Library Trust Fund, Rt. Hon. Henry Nwawuba, welcomed the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, GCON, alongside principal officers of the House, to the National Assembly Library for the official flag-off ceremony of the National Event to Promote Grassroots Sports Development in Nigeria. Hosted by the House Committee on Sports, the event marked an essential step towards elevating grassroots sports in the country.

Among those present were Hon. Kabiru Ahmadu, the Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, and Alh. Shehu Dikko, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission. Their presence underscored the importance of collaboration among key stakeholders within Nigeria’s sports ecosystem. Notable figures such as Comr. Phillip Shaibu, the Director General of the National Institute for Sports, and Alh. Ibrahim Musa Gusau, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, and Hon. Muhammadu Buba Jajere, Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Sports, also delivered impactful speeches emphasizing the critical role sports play in the holistic development of the nation.

A highlight of the ceremony was the official launch of the Compendium of Innovations and Achievements by the House Committee on Sports. This compendium showcases the committee’s strategic initiatives aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s sports sector, particularly at the grassroots level, where immense potential exists. By promoting youth engagement in sports from an early age, the committee fosters not only athletic talent but also a culture of teamwork, discipline, and healthy living among Nigerian youths.

In a further demonstration of commitment, sports equipment was distributed to members of the Sports Committee for deployment in grassroots programs throughout the country. Such investments are pivotal, as they ensure that aspiring athletes, irrespective of their backgrounds or financial means, have access to the necessary resources to nurture their talents. This move aligns with the committee’s overarching goal of promoting inclusivity and diversity in sports.

The backdrop of this event is significant, given the recent changes in the leadership of the House Committee on Sports. Following the untimely passing of the former Chairman, Hon. Ekene Adams, the committee has seen new leadership under Rt. Hon. Kabiru Amadu, who assumed office on October 2, 2024. Under his guidance, the committee is positioned to tackle pressing challenges in Nigeria’s sports ecosystem with renewed vigor and innovative policies.

According to Order 128 (1) of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives (11th Edition), the Committee on Sports is charged with essential oversight and legislative responsibilities. This includes monitoring the activities of the National Sports Commission, development of sports arenas, and the broader administration of sports in the country. The committee’s jurisdiction extends to a range of key agencies, such as the National Sports Commission, Nigeria Football Federation, and the National Institute for Sports, fostering a coordinated approach to sports governance.

In its quest for revitalization, the House Committee on Sports has unveiled several strategic innovations. These initiatives aim to reposition Nigeria’s sports sector not just for national pride but for global competitiveness. A central focus has been the promotion of grassroots sports development across all geopolitical zones in Nigeria, providing a foundation for aspiring athletes. This initiative is complemented by a thorough overhaul of outdated sports infrastructure, ensuring that athletes compete in environments that meet international standards.

Moreover, the committee has recognized the importance of producing a highly motivated cadre of sports professionals. This includes the introduction of enhanced welfare packages for athletes, coaches, and officials to ensure they are adequately supported in pursuit of excellence. Training and capacity building remain at the forefront of the committee’s vision, with ongoing retraining programs for sports administrators, coaches, and athletes designed to uplift Nigeria’s sporting standards.

Financial backing plays a crucial role in these transformative efforts. The committee has successfully advocated for significantly improved budgetary allocations for the sports sector, evidencing a remarkable 288% increase. This increase reflects a growing recognition of sports’ economic and social relevance, making it a viable sector for investment and growth. The reverberations of enhanced funding can be felt through the revamped sports infrastructure that meets the demands of modern athletics and promotes access.

The committee’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. Through its innovative approach, notable milestones have been reached, including the construction of new sports facilities throughout various regions in Nigeria. These facilities serve as hubs for talent development and community engagement, offering ample opportunity for participation at the grassroots level.

Furthermore, effective collaborations with stakeholders, corporate partners, and institutions have played a vital role in bolstering grassroots sports initiatives. This collaborative spirit is essential for creating a thriving sports economy in Nigeria that resonates with the aspirations of its youth and communities.

The distribution of sports equipment to House leadership and committee members reinforces the commitment to sports development at the constituency level. By equipping representatives with the necessary tools to support local athletes and sports programs, the committee ensures that the reach of these initiatives extends throughout the country.

Ultimately, the National Event to Promote Grassroots Sports Development is more than a ceremonial occasion; it represents a collective commitment to harness the power of sports in fostering national unity, health, and youth development. With a strategic framework in place, the House Committee on Sports is poised to make a transformative impact, nurturing the next generation of athletes while solidifying Nigeria’s standing on the global sports stage. The journey ahead is filled with opportunities and challenges, but with unified efforts, the future of Nigerian sports looks promising.
