On Wednesday, during the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the National Examinations Council (NECO), on behalf of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas GCON, Deputy Speaker, Hon. Benjamin Kalu presented the lead paper calling for urgent reforms to strengthen the integrity, credibility, and innovation of Nigeria’s national assessment system, reaffirming that examination bodies are not merely technical instruments, but critical governance institutions central to national development, economic progress, and public trust.
At 25, NECO deserves both recognition and honest evaluation. Millions of young Nigerians have relied on this institution as a pathway to education and employment, and they deserve an assessment system that truly reflects their competence, commands global recognition, and upholds the standard of merit.
The House of Representatives remains committed to deploying its legislative oversight, and appropriation powers to modernise our assessment architecture, combat examination malpractice, and build a system that earns the confidence of every Nigerian.
