New Bill Introduced to Establish National Institute for Electric Mobility in Sokoto

On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the Nigerian House of Representatives conducted the First Reading of the “National Institute for Electric Mobility, Dogondaji, Sokoto State (Establishment) Bill, 2025” (HB.2489). The bill, sponsored by Hon. Abdussamad Dasuki, aims to establish a national institute dedicated to advancing electric mobility in Nigeria.

The First Reading marked the formal introduction of the bill, during which its title was read aloud and officially recorded in the day’s Order Paper. This stage is primarily procedural and does not involve any debate or discussion among lawmakers.

Hon. Abdussamad Dasuki represents the Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency in Sokoto State and has a legislative track record that includes initiatives focused on the needs and development of his constituency. His support for this bill reflects his ongoing commitment to promoting sustainable practices and regional development.

While specific details of the bill’s provisions are still forthcoming, the establishment of a national institute for electric mobility is expected to focus on research, training, and policy development. This initiative signals a strategic move towards fostering innovation in electric transportation and could enhance economic opportunities in the region.

Following the First Reading, the bill will advance to a Second Reading, where its general principles and objectives will be debated. Should it pass this stage, it will be referred to the relevant House committee(s) for a thorough review, including public hearings and potential amendments. After the committee stage concludes, the bill will return to the House for a Third Reading and final vote. If approved, it will then be sent to the Senate for consideration and concurrence.

The proposed National Institute for Electric Mobility represents a significant step towards modernizing Nigeria’s transportation sector and promoting sustainable energy solutions.
