Nigerian Lawmakers Kick Off 2026 with Bold Reform Agenda

January 27, 2026-The House of Representatives is hitting the ground running this year, signaling a major push for legislative reform. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu has announced that the House will prioritize three heavy-hitting items: a comprehensive Constitution Review, critical updates to the Electoral Act, and the timely passage of the 2026 Proposed Budget.

Following a productive holiday recess, the House is shifting its focus toward strengthening Nigeria’s democratic foundations and ensuring economic stability.

The Three Pillars of the 2026 Agenda
The legislative roadmap for the first quarter focuses on key areas designed to improve governance and transparency:

Electoral Amendment Bill: Building on lessons from previous cycles, the House aims to refine voting processes to ensure smoother, more transparent elections.

Constitution Review: This ambitious project seeks to address long-standing structural issues within the federation, potentially touching on devolution of powers and judicial reforms.

2026 Budget Approval: Lawmakers are committed to a rigorous review of the proposed budget to ensure funds are allocated effectively toward infrastructure and social welfare.

A Unified Front for Progress
Deputy Speaker Kalu emphasized that these priorities aren’t just administrative tasks—they are a commitment to the Nigerian people. By tackling the Constitution and Electoral Act simultaneously, the House intends to “fine-tune the engines of democracy” before the next political cycle gains full steam.

The House is expected to engage heavily with stakeholders and civil society organizations in the coming months to ensure these reforms reflect the will of the public.

“Our focus is clear: we are here to deliver legislation that works for every Nigerian. From securing our elections to stabilizing our economy through a disciplined budget, 2026 will be a year of action.” — Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker.

Hon. Kalu also formally informed the house of the passing of Senator Akwashiki Godiya who represented the Nasarawa North Senatorial District. The late senator passed away on December 31, 2025 after a protracted illness while receiving treatment in India. She served her constituent with distinction from 2019-2023 and 2023-2025.
