The Senate has passed a bill establishing a comprehensive legal and statutory framework for the newly upgraded Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano.

Sponsored by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano North), the legislation seeks to formalize the management, administrative structure, and academic mandate of the institution, establishing it as a premier hub for advanced teacher education and national development.

It establishes the governing authority, administrative oversight, and regulatory framework required for the university to operate fully as a degree-awarding federal tertiary institution.

Resources are directed toward advancing high-quality educational research and strengthening professional teacher education initiatives in Northern Nigeria.

In addition, it fulfills the legislative process following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval converting the former Federal College of Education, Kano, into a full-fledged university in September 2024, and its subsequent renaming in May 2025 after the late Nigerian statesman, diplomat, and orator, Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule.

Leading the debate on the bill, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin highlighted the legislative journey, noting that the bill passed its first reading on March 25, 2025, and reached full passage under plenary presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

We cannot thank Mr. President enough. He loves Kano and has consistently acceded to our requests, pointing to key education projects delivered to the state, including the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo, and the Federal Polytechnic, Rano.
