A Solemn Tribute to Senator Barinada Mpigi

Despite the return to business, the atmosphere in the chamber turned somber as the Senate moved a resolution to honor the memory of Senator Barinada Mpigi. Senator Mpigi, who represented the Rivers South-East Senatorial District, passed away on February 19, 2026.

During the lead debate regarding the tribute, the late Senator was remembered as a humble and accessible lawmaker who demonstrated unwavering dedication to the welfare of his constituents. The Senate expressed “deep shock and profound sadness” over the loss of a colleague described as a highly respected pillar of the parliamentary community.

“His passing is a significant loss to this hallowed chamber and the people of Rivers State,” the Senate noted during the session. Read more here.

In accordance with long standing parliamentary tradition, the Senate observed a minute of silence to honor Senator Mpigi’s legacy. Consequently, the Senate resolved to suspend further plenary activities until Wednesday as a mark of respect for the deceased lawmakers.
