Senate Begins Pivotal Deliberations on 2026 Electoral Act Repeal and Re-enactment Bill

The Nigerian Senate has officially commenced formal consideration of the Electoral Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill 2026, marking a decisive step toward comprehensive reform of the nation’s voting framework.

Following a brief deferment on Wednesday to allow for individual preparation, the Senate moved into a strategic closed-door session today. The session is dedicated to a rigorous examination of the legislative documents and recommendations submitted by Senator Simon Lalong, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters.

While the House of Representatives has already passed the bill, Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized that the upper chamber would not rush the process. Highlighting the high stakes for Nigeria’s democracy, Akpabio noted that thoroughness is essential to prevent future legal disputes.

“This is a very important bill, especially as it is election time,” Senator Akpabio stated. “We must take our time to ensure justice is done to all, so that we do not end up at the tribunal.”

The Committee’s clause-by-clause analysis suggests that the 2026 Bill is designed to modernize the democratic process. According to the Committee’s findings, the legislation aims to:

Enhance Transparency: Create a more open and verifiable electoral cycle.

Strengthen Institutions: Boost the administrative and operational capacity of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Protect Voter Integrity: Implement safeguards against fraud and expand voter participation.

Build Public Trust: Restore confidence in the electoral system as a lasting national legacy.

The Senate Committee on Electoral Matters has formally recommended the passage of the bill as amended, citing its potential to provide a more stable and credible foundation for upcoming elections.

The Senate is expected to resume open plenary debate on the bill following the conclusion of the current review session.
