Senate Adjourns Plenary to February 24 for Intensive 2026 Budget Scrutiny

The Senate has officially adjourned plenary sessions until Tuesday, February 24, 2026. This strategic recess is designed to allow standing committees to conduct comprehensive oversight and rigorous scrutiny of the 2026 National Budget proposals.

The decision to pause floor proceedings follows the successful second reading of the Appropriation Bill. By shifting focus to the committee level, lawmakers aim to ensure that every naira allocated aligns with national priorities, fiscal responsibility, and the developmental needs of the Nigerian people.

Key Objectives of the Adjournment:

Detailed Oversight: Committees will engage directly with Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to defend their budgetary allocations.

Fiscal Transparency: Ensuring the 2026 budget addresses critical infrastructure, healthcare, and economic stability.

Stakeholder Engagement: Providing a window for legislative due diligence and public accountability.

The Senate is committed to delivering a budget that is not only timely but also impactful and transparent.

During this period, the Senate remains functional at the committee level, and all designated members are expected to prioritize these sessions to ensure the budget is ready for final passage shortly after the house reconvenes.
