Senate Leader Pledges ₦1 Billion Research Fund and Multi-Million Naira Student Grants at FUTES Matriculation

The Senate Leader of the 10th National Assembly, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has announced a landmark ₦1 billion research endowment for lecturers at the newly established Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences (FUTES), Iyin-Ekiti.

Speaking at the university’s historic first matriculation ceremony over the weekend, Senator Bamidele, who represents Ekiti Central, detailed a five year support plan where ₦200 million will be released annually to fuel cutting edge academic research.

In a significant gesture to the institution’s 1,564 pioneer students, the Senate Leader donated over ₦31 million in direct grants. Each matriculating student received a cash gift of ₦20,000 along with food items to support their transition into the 2025/2026 academic session.

Senator Bamidele outlined an ambitious roadmap to transform FUTES into a premier research hub:

Faculty Growth: While the university currently operates four faculties, plans are finalized to establish three additional faculties.

Medical Village: Engagement has commenced with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to develop a state-of-the-art Medical Complex. The facility will feature an ICU, a Diagnostic Centre (MRI/CT scans), and specialized centers for Eye Care, Dental Care, and Dialysis.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Gbenga Aribisala, noted that the institution achieved the remarkable feat of commencing academic activities with 36 departments within just one year of its establishment.

“FUTES is poised to rank among leading universities globally within its first decade,” Prof. Aribisala stated. He urged students to prioritize character and discipline, warning against antisocial behaviors such as drug abuse and intimidation.

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji (represented by Dr. Azeez Mayowa), commended President Bola Tinubu for his assent to the university’s establishment bill. He further lauded the Senate Leader’s tireless efforts in ensuring the university met its operational milestones within record time.
