The House of Representatives Committee on Federal Polytechnics and Higher Technical Education has reaffirmed its commitment to revitalizing the nation’s technical education sector, describing polytechnics as the backbone of Nigeria’s industrial and technological ambitions.
Speaking on Tuesday during the resumed budget defense sessions for federal polytechnics, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Fuad Laguda, emphasized that the House is dedicated to fostering a “partnership for progress” to address the systemic challenges hindering technical institutions.
Hon. Laguda highlighted the indispensable role polytechnics play in developing middle-level manpower, which remains a critical driver for national economic growth. He asserted that Nigeria’s quest for a technological breakthrough is dependent on well-funded and properly equipped institutions.
“The country’s quest for technological advancement cannot be achieved without well-funded and properly equipped technical institutions,” Laguda stated. “Everything we do is to improve the system and ensure things work better for the benefit of the nation.”
During the proceedings, the Committee approved the budget performance reports of several federal polytechnics. However, the Chairman urged the Committee of Federal Rectors to ensure that all outstanding budget documents are submitted promptly to facilitate seamless legislative oversight.
In addition to the polytechnics, the Committee scrutinized the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN). Hon. Laguda raised concerns regarding operational efficiency, specifically questioning how the council manages eight regional offices with a staff of only 58.
In response, the Registrar of the CPN, Mr. Adegbiji, assured the lawmakers of the Council’s capacity to regulate and accredit the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector effectively. He pledged full cooperation and transparency, promising to provide all necessary documentation to the Committee within the stipulated timeframe.
The Committee’s stance marks a renewed legislative push to ensure that technical education in Nigeria is not only adequately funded but also held to high standards of accountability. By strengthening the synergy between the legislature and educational heads, the House aims to create an environment where technical graduates are equipped to lead Nigeria’s industrial future.
