The President of the Senate, His Excellency, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has extended his warmest congratulations to women across the globe, with a special tribute to the resilience and indispensable contributions of Nigerian women, on the occasion of International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026.
In a personal and emotive statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, the Senate President described mothers as the “best gift God has given to man,” citing his own life journey as a testament to the transformative power of a woman’s care.
Reflecting on his upbringing, Senator Akpabio shared that his success is rooted in the devotion of his mother.
“I am the biggest beneficiary of the love, care, compassion, and sacrifice of a woman,” Akpabio stated. “My mother gave her all to raise me to become what I am today. I remain ever grateful for what our mothers endure in raising children and supporting the fabric of our society.”
Aligning with the 2026 global theme, “Give to Gain,” the Senate President reaffirmed the 10th National Assembly’s commitment to legislative actions that prioritize women. He emphasized that the legislature is focused on driving robust investments in the “womenfolk” to ensure they occupy their rightful place in Nigeria’s future.
Senator Akpabio highlighted two primary areas of legislative focus:
Economic Empowerment: Creating frameworks that allow women to thrive in the national marketplace.
Political Participation: Pushing for increased female representation in decision-making processes.
Addressing the daughters, sisters, and colleagues of the nation, the Senate President praised their “relentless efforts” and “invaluable contributions” to national building, noting that their work often goes on behind the scenes but never goes unnoticed by the leadership of the country.
“On behalf of my family, my constituents, the Senate and the entire 10th National Assembly, I wish all our mothers, sisters, daughters and aunties a blessed and peaceful celebration,” the statement concluded. “May your efforts never go in vain.”
