President Tinubu Transmits 2026 FCT Budget to Senate

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially submitted the 2026 Statutory Budget proposal for the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to the Nigerian Senate for legislative consideration and approval.

The budget proposal was formally presented during Tuesday’s plenary session, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio reading the executive communication to lawmakers following their return from a three-week recess dedicated to budget defense sessions.

In accordance with Section 299 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the National Assembly serves as the legislative authority for the Federal Capital Territory.

President Tinubu’s letter underscored that the 2026 spending plan is a strategic blueprint designed to catalyze socio-economic growth and bolster the quality of life for all FCT residents. The President emphasized that the primary objective of this appropriation is to provide a sustainable pathway out of poverty for the territory’s most vulnerable citizens.

The 2026 FCT Budget is anchored on several high-impact sectors intended to drive productivity and social stability:

Healthcare Services: Expanding access to quality medical care and facility upgrades.

Economic Empowerment: Focused initiatives for job creation and youth-centric programs.

Education & Social Welfare: Enhancing school infrastructure and strengthening social safety nets.

Agricultural Productivity: Implementing modern frameworks to increase food security and output within the capital.

“The 2026 FCT Budget Proposal prioritises investment in health care services, job creation, youth empowerment, social welfare services, education infrastructure as well as increasing productivity in agriculture,” the President’s letter stated.

The submission follows the previous fiscal year’s 2025 FCT Appropriation Bill, which totaled N1.7 trillion. With the formal receipt of the 2026 proposal, the Senate will now transition the bill to relevant committees for rigorous oversight and departmental scrutiny.

Final approval by both chambers of the National Assembly will be required before the FCTA can commence implementation of the proposed developmental projects.
