Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called for a strategic renewal of diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and Italy, urging the European nation to breathe new life into long dormant bilateral agreements.
The Senate President made this appeal on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the newly appointed Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, Roberto Mengoni, at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.
Welcoming the envoy to his new post, Akpabio pointed out that several existing frameworks for cooperation between the two countries have stalled over time. He charged Ambassador Mengoni to conduct a comprehensive review of these “moribund” pacts to ensure they are revived for mutual benefit.
Beyond formal treaties, Akpabio emphasized the human element of the diplomatic relationship, noting that over 100,000 Nigerians currently reside legally in Italy.
To better support this significant diaspora and foster closer ties, the Senate President specifically requested that the Italian embassy streamline its consular operations.
Ease of Travel: Akpabio implored the Ambassador to make the visa application process less cumbersome for Nigerian citizens.
Soft Power: He advocated for an increase in cultural exchange programs to bridge the gap between the two societies.
In response, Ambassador Mengoni expressed his dedication to strengthening the bond between Rome and Abuja. He noted his intention to deepen relations not only with the executive arm of the Nigerian government but specifically with the Legislature during his tenure.
The envoy signaled his optimism that his stay in Nigeria would serve as a catalyst for developing bilateral relations across all levels of governance, focusing on shared interests and institutional cooperation.
