Lawmakers Demand Urgent Investigation Following Tragic Itakpe-Warri Train Accident

Following the tragic train derailment along the Itakpe–Warri rail corridor on Monday, June 8, 2026, the House of Representatives has officially called for a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the incident. The motion, spearheaded by Hon. Francis E. Waive, addresses the accident involving a train that departed Ujevwe bound for Itakpe, which resulted in at least four confirmed fatalities and left numerous passengers with varying degrees of injuries.

The Itakpe–Warri line serves as a critical standard-gauge transit artery connecting Delta, Edo, and Kogi states, acting as a vital economic link between Southern and Northern Nigeria.

The House expressed deep concern over the recurring operational disruptions and safety vulnerabilities plaguing this specific route. Lawmakers noted that the incident extends far beyond physical casualties, leaving passengers to grapple with severe emotional trauma, extensive property damage, and financial losses.

Without a rigorous probe and immediate remedial actions, the legislature warned that public confidence in the nation’s railway system as a safe and reliable mode of mass transit could be severely undermined.

The House formally commended the Delta State Government, emergency response teams, healthcare workers, security personnel, and local citizens who rapidly mobilized to rescue victims and provide emergency medical care.

To ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences, the House has officially resolved to:

  • Urge the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to conduct a thorough investigation into the root cause of the accident, mandate the public disclosure of its findings, and outline definitive preventative measures.
  • Mandate the NRC to provide adequate compensation to all affected passengers for their injuries, financial losses, and psychological trauma.
  • Charge the House Committees on Land Transport and Legislative Compliance to monitor implementation closely and report back to the floor within four (4) weeks for further legislative action.

In a solemn show of respect, the House observed a minute of silence to honor the victims who lost their lives, offering prayers for the repose of their souls and the quick recovery of the injured.
