In a historic stride toward actualizing a secure, inclusive, and digitally advanced economy, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has officially assented to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2026 on Friday, June 26, 2026.
The newly enacted legislation repeals and replaces the archaic NIMC Act of 2007. It establishes a modernized, comprehensive legal framework tailored to the demands of the 21st-century digital landscape, marking a transformative milestone for national governance, data security, and citizen empowerment.
In full alignment with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) and global best practices, the new Act institutionalizes stringent mechanisms to ensure that the personal information of Nigerian citizens is securely processed, stored, and protected under international privacy standards.
The legislation officially designates NIMC as the Root Certification Authority for Nigeria’s National Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). This positions the Commission as the nation’s supreme regulatory anchor for secure digital identity, cryptographic authentication, and electronic trust services.
The law empowers NIMC to coordinate and enforce secure, seamless, and interoperable data exchange systems among various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), as well as authorized private organizations and corporate entities.
Under the strategic theme “One Card, Multiple Possibilities,” the Act legally positions the NIMC General Multipurpose Card as a versatile, comprehensive credential for nationwide identity verification and multi-sector usage.
The implementation of the NIMC Act 2026 represents a paradigm shift in how identity services are delivered across public and private sectors. By creating a unified and highly secure digital identity ecosystem, the Act directly addresses cybersecurity vulnerabilities, boosts consumer confidence in digital transactions, and strengthens electronic trust across the burgeoning digital economy.
For the everyday Nigerian, both at home and in the diaspora, the practical impacts of this legislation mean expanded, frictionless, and more convenient access to critical identity services. It provides accelerated and tamper-proof verification processes while offering unparalleled protection against identity fraud and data breaches.
This legislative accomplishment underscores the administration’s unwavering commitment to digital governance, structural institutional reform, and long-term national development. By cementing a world-class foundation for digital infrastructure, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s latest policy delivery actively propels the nation closer toward achieving its strategic macroeconomic vision of a one-trillion-dollar economy.
