The newly enacted legislation repeals and replaces the archaic NIMC Act of 2007. The legislation officially designates NIMC as the Root Certification Authority for Nigeria’s National Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). This positions the Commission as the nation’s supreme regulatory anchor for secure digital identity, cryptographic authentication, and electronic trust services.
The law empowers NIMC to coordinate and enforce secure, seamless, and interoperable data exchange systems among various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), as well as authorized private organizations and corporate entities.
Under the strategic theme “One Card, Multiple Possibilities,” the Act legally positions the NIMC General Multipurpose Card as a versatile, comprehensive credential for nationwide identity verification and multi-sector usage.
