House of Reps Constitutes Key Committees on State Police, 2026 Budget Investigation, and Fiscal Oversight
Moving swiftly to advance critical national reforms and demand fiscal accountability, the House of Representatives has announced the formation of three high-profile committees.

The announcement, made during plenary on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, establishes one Conference Committee to accelerate the landmark State Police Bill and two Ad Hoc Committees tasked with investigating budget irregularities and funding delays.

These panels are designed to strengthen legislative oversight, protect public resources, and fast-track constitutional reforms.

The Newly Constituted Committees

  1. Conference Committee on the Constitution Alteration Bill on State Police
Chairman: Rt. Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, CON (APC, Edo)

This committee is charged with harmonizing the House of Representatives’ version of the State Police Bill with that of the Senate. This harmonization is a crucial final step toward amending the constitution to permit sub-national policing, a reform widely seen as vital to addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.

  1. Ad Hoc Committee to Investigate the Alleged Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC)
Chairman: Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi (APC, Plateau)

The panel will launch an immediate investigation into how an unapproved body, the alleged “Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council”, was included in the 2026 Appropriation Framework. This probe highlights the House’s commitment to strict budget discipline and weeding out unauthorized spending lines.

  1. Ad Hoc Committee on Delayed Releases and Inadequate Funding of National Budgets (2024–2026)
Chairman: Hon. Abubakar Kabir Abubakar (APC, Kano)

This committee will investigate the systemic bottlenecks causing delayed releases and severe underfunding of the 2024, 2025, and 2026 national budgets. The inquiry aims to determine why critical capital projects and agency allocations remain stalled despite legislative approval.

Through these appointments, the House of Representatives under the leadership of Speaker Abbas Tajudeen reiterates its proactive stance on national security and public financial management.

These committees underscore the House’s unwavering commitment to expediting constitutional reform, strengthening our legislative oversight, and promoting absolute transparency, accountability, and fiscal discipline in the management of public resources.

The committees are expected to begin their assignments immediately, with mandates to report back to the floor of the House within stipulated timelines.
