As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 General Elections, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has underscored the responsibility of institutions with public trust to help safeguard national peace.
Highlighting the vital role of faith-based groups, Hon. Abbas noted that religious bodies carry immense weight, reach vast congregations, and exert deep influence across communities.
His comments came during a meeting in Abuja with the Religious Network for Peace and Development, led by former Kano State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau. During the visit, the delegation presented its upcoming programs and activities ahead of the 2027 polls.
Hon. Abbas urged the Network and other religious organizations nationwide to intensify their efforts before, during, and after the elections to promote peace, tolerance, unity, and responsible civic participation.
Reaffirming the commitment of the legislature, the Speaker assured that the House of Representatives remains dedicated to supporting genuine initiatives aimed at delivering free, fair, credible, and peaceful elections, positioning the parliament as a reliable partner in strengthening national cohesion and democratic development.
Hon. Abbas expressed deep humility and appreciation upon accepting his appointment as the Grand Patron of the Religious Network for Peace and Development, assuring the delegation that he would be an active, hands-on leader in this role.
Emphasizing that election cycles pass while national peace must endure, the Speaker called on politicians and citizens alike to engage in political competition without hostility, to disagree without severing communal bonds, and to remember their shared duty to build one unified country. He concluded by affirming that peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but the foundational pillar required to build a prosperous Nigeria.
