Senate Urges Immediate Rescue of Abducted Nigerians

On Tueday, 29 September, 2026. The Senate President, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, has issued an urgent charge to security agencies across the country to intensify rescue efforts and secure the release of all citizens currently held captive by armed groups.

Delivering a welcome address titled “Keeping Faith with Nigeria” to mark the end of the Senate’s annual recess, Akpabio declared that parliament cannot consider itself free while innocent Nigerians remain in bondage. Referencing recent abductions in Marisa, Dekera Mosque, and other regions, the Senate President reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to using its legislative, appropriation, and oversight powers to fully support security institutions.

“So long as a single Nigerian languishes in captivity, a part of Nigeria is held captive; and this Chamber cannot call itself free of the burden,” Akpabio stated. “We call upon our security agencies to pursue the rescue of captives and the protection of vulnerable communities with renewed vigour.”

Beyond national security, the Senate President outlined key legislative priorities to tackle the pressing challenges facing the nation, including economic hardship and recent environmental disasters.

In the wake of severe flooding that destroyed farmlands and homes during the legislative recess, the Senate called on all tiers of government to expedite emergency response measures to alleviate suffering and prevent imminent food shortages.

Akpabio acknowledged the heavy financial burden on ordinary citizens, small business owners, and unemployed graduates. He urged lawmakers to rigorously examine ongoing economic reforms to ensure policies directly alleviate the daily struggles of Nigerians.

As political activity builds toward the 2027 general elections, Akpabio warned against electoral violence, religious profiling, and divisive rhetoric, emphasizing that “no electoral prize is worth a Nigerian life.” He assured the public that governance and legislative duties will not be sidelined by political campaigns.

Highlighting the upcoming 66th Independence Anniversary, Akpabio called on public officers to embody patriotism and steadfastness. He emphasized that the Senate’s success will not be measured by parliamentary debate, but by safer communities, improved livelihoods, and tangible remedies for the Nigerian people.
