House Moves to Intervene in Bende Worsening Erosion and Flooding

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to immediately intervene and deploy comprehensive erosion and flood-control measures across flood-ravaged communities in Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State.

The resolution followed the adoption of a Motion of Urgent Public Importance sponsored by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, PhD, CFR, and presented on the floor of the House by Hon. Daniel Amos during Tuesday’s plenary session.

The House expressed deep concern over the escalating ecological emergency characterized by expanding gully erosion, severe flooding, destroyed farmlands, washed-away infrastructure, and tragic loss of human lives. Severe flooding triggered by torrential rainfall recently submerged homes and community infrastructure, including the palaces of Eze Ifeanyi Owo of Amaeze Community and Eze Gilbert Chukwu of Amaokai Community. Tragically, the environmental disaster has claimed two lives in Ndi Uzor.

Particularly hard-hit communities include Ugwueke, Amaokai, Amaeze, Ezeukwu, Ndi Uzor, and the Akunu axis, where expanding gullies threaten to cut off access to essential services, markets, schools, and healthcare facilities.

To mitigate further disaster and support affected residents, the House passed several resolutions:
