Senate President Akpabio Advocates Stronger Parliaments and Governance at 153rd IPU Assembly in Tanzania

Nigeria’s President of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to international parliamentary diplomacy, accountability, and good governance during the opening of the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) holding in Arusha, Tanzania.

Leading the Nigerian delegation to the international gathering, Senator Akpabio joined legislative leaders and parliamentary heads from across the globe as the summit centered on building stronger democratic institutions, expanding opportunities, and deepening cross-border cooperation.

Addressing delegates during the opening session, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania highlighted the vital role that legislative bodies play in serving citizens. President Hassan charged parliamentarians to remain responsive to the needs of the populace and to bolster accountability across public institutions.

The address aligned directly with the central theme of this year’s assembly: “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all.”

Speaking on the sidelines of the assembly, Senator Akpabio noted that inter-parliamentary collaboration has become increasingly critical as nations navigate complex global issues, including ongoing conflicts, economic turbulence, and climate change.

According to the Senate President, Nigeria’s presence at the global forum underscores its effort to expand international partnerships and contribute meaningfully to global dialogues aimed at advancing peace, good governance, and sustainable development.

Senator Akpabio further assured the global parliamentary community that Nigeria will continue to serve as a bridge-builder, partnering with global allies toward a more inclusive, peaceful, and prosperous future.
