Rep. Ikenga Chinyere Moves Motion on Devastating Flooding and Road Collapse in Ideato Federal Constituency

Member representing Ideato North/South Federal Constituency, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, has called on the Federal Government to immediately intervene in the severe flooding, erosion, and infrastructure collapse devastating communities across his constituency and cutting off vital access to neighboring Abia State.

Raising a motion of urgent public importance on the floor of the House of Representatives, the lawmaker highlighted the catastrophic toll on Urualla, Apo, Umueshi, Dimako, and other surrounding communities, as well as the road linking Ideato to Abia State.

According to Hon. Chinyere, the ecological disaster has completely severed access to approximately 22 communities, leaving thousands of residents stranded and unable to reach healthcare facilities, markets, schools, and other essential public services. Furthermore, the degraded road network linking Ideato North/South to Abia State has become virtually impassable, threatening inter-state trade and local livelihoods.

“The situation requires immediate and decisive action from all relevant agencies of government before more lives and livelihoods are lost,” the lawmaker stated, emphasizing that the severe erosion threatens to permanently isolate whole communities if left unchecked.

Following the presentation, the House resolved to urge the Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and ecological intervention bodies, to:

  • Immediately conduct comprehensive impact assessments and supply food, medical supplies, and shelter materials to displaced and affected residents.
  • Initiate urgent repairs on the disrupted road corridors linking Ideato communities to Abia state.
  • Collaborate with the Ecological Project Office and the Federal Ministry of Environment to design and execute long-term soil conservation and flood mitigation engineering.
