A bill seeking to amend the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) Act, No. 45, 2023, on Thursday, October 22, 2026, passed its Second Reading on the floor of the House of Representatives.

The legislation, HB. 2790, titled “A Bill for an Act to Amend the National Senior Secondary Education Commission Act, No. 45, 2023 to strengthen the Administration and Coordination of Public Senior Secondary Education and for Related Matters,” was sponsored by the House Leader, Hon. Julius Ihonvbere.

He said that the key objective of the Amendment Bill is to create proper administrative structure in senior secondary schools. This will enhance operational efficiency within public senior secondary education nationwide, facilitate seamless coordination between federal, state, and local educational authorities to maintain uniform standardisation and quality control, and refine regulatory oversight mechanisms to ensure accountable management of resources and infrastructure in public senior secondary institutions.

Hon. Julius Ihonvbere emphasized that “Strengthening senior secondary education is critical to building a solid foundation for tertiary learning and workforce development. This amendment will ensure the Commission is legally and administratively equipped to drive standardisation and quality across public schools in Nigeria.”

Following the successful passage of its Second Reading, HB. 2790 has been referred to the relevant House Committee on Education for further legislative action.
