President Tinubu, Represented By Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Flags Off Historic $100M South-East Gas Pipeline Project In Enugu

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, officially flagged off the South-East Gas Pipeline Infrastructure Investment Ceremony in Enugu. The landmark initiative, organized by the South East Development Commission (SEDC), marks a major milestone in driving economic expansion, industrialization, and energy security across the region.

Delivering President Tinubu’s address at the Hotel Presidential in Enugu, Rt. Hon. Kalu emphasized that the $100 million, 400-kilometer regional pipeline project is designed to deliver a sustainable energy backbone for the South-East. The infrastructure will span all five states—Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi—delivering approximately 254 million standard cubic feet of natural gas daily to major commercial hubs such as Aba, Nnewi, and Onitsha.

Our ambition is not simply to deliver gas to existing factories. It is to make possible factories that do not yet exist, industrial parks yet to be developed, and investments that have remained on the drawing board because reliable energy was unavailable.

He highlighted that the initiative directly aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at ending decades of reliance on expensive, inefficient diesel generators, cutting operational overhead for manufacturers, and creating thousands of jobs for the region’s youth.

The project is being developed by the SEDC in strategic partnership with GasSync Limited, NNPC Gas Marketing Limited, state governments, and private sector investors. As part of its seed support, the SEDC committed an initial $3 million to mobilize additional institutional capital for the $100 million first phase.

The high-level event brought together key regional leaders and stakeholders, including Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Mbah, SEDC Managing Director Mr. Mark Okoye, APC South-East National Vice Chairman Dr. Ijeomah Arodiogbu, as well as captains of industry and community leaders.

In his concluding remarks, the Deputy Speaker reaffirmed the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to working alongside the SEDC, state governments, and private investors to ensure smooth project execution, right-of-way permissions, and community engagement as construction progresses.
