The lawmakers transitioned into the Committee of the Whole, deliberated on the report, and ultimately approved all 34 nominees.
Budget Consideration and Plenary Suspension
Through a voice vote, the Senate proceeded to a one-hour recess to finalize discussions at the committee level on the N49.7 trillion 2025 national budget, deliberations on which had commenced on Tuesday, 7th January 2025.
Upon resumption, the Senate resolved to suspend plenary for two weeks, with sessions set to reconvene on Tuesday, 28th January 2025
Additionally, it was agreed that Thursday, 16th January 2025, would be designated as an Open Day for budget deliberations, allowing input from a wide range of stakeholders, including but not limited to heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), as well as other representatives from the polity.
Adjournment
Following extensive discussions on the Regional Commissions and other legislative matters, the Senate adjourned its plenary session at 3:32 PM. The next plenary is scheduled for Tuesday, 28th January 2025.
Presentation and Consideration of Reports
The Deputy Leader of the Senate, Senator Oyelola Yisa Ashir (Kwara South), invited the Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee on the Screening of Members for the North West Development Commission and South East Development Commission, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North), to present the Committee’s report.
The Senate commenced its plenary session at 11:38 AM with the recitation of the National Anthem. Prayers were led by the President of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON. The Votes and Proceedings of the previous session, held on Thursday, 19th December 2024, were reviewed and subsequently approved. This was followed by the administration of oaths, announcements, and the reading of official correspondences.
In his presentation, Senator Kalu emphasized the nominees’ demonstrated competence and readiness to lead their respective commissions effectively, as observed during the screening process
