Highlights from the Nigerian Delegation at the 152nd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly

The Grand National Assembly of Türkiye (TBMM) hosted an inspiring gathering of parliamentary leaders from across the globe at the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), bringing together more than 1,500 delegates and over 720 parliamentarians from 126 countries.

Despite geopolitical tensions and global uncertainty, 65 Speakers of Parliament and 46 Deputy Speakers contributed to #IPU152, alongside young MPs who accounted for 13% of the total attendance. Together, these parliamentarians demonstrated that dialogue, cooperation, and parliamentary diplomacy remain powerful tools for building peace and addressing shared challenges during the five-day event in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Following the Assembly, the consensus adopted the Istanbul Declaration: “Nurturing hope, securing peace and ensuring justice for future generations,” reaffirming commitments to peace, human rights, and the principles of the United Nations, while addressing pressing global issues including armed conflicts, economic inequality, climate change, misinformation, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence.

With strong participation from women parliamentarians (37%) and younger lawmakers, the Assembly reflected the growing diversity and inclusiveness of global parliamentary leadership.

Members of the Nigerian delegation included the President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, National Assembly Library Executive Secretary Rt. Hon. Henry Nwawuba, House Committee Chairman for Women Affairs Hon. Kafilat Ogbara, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong and others.
