The House of Representatives on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, called on federal disaster management agencies to immediately deploy emergency relief materials, medical aid, and rehabilitation support to Gashua, the headquarters of Bade Local Government Area in Yobe State, following a catastrophic windstorm and severe flooding that swept through the area.
The resolution followed a motion presented on the floor of the House by Hon. Hassan Kaikaku Jakduwa, representing the Bade/Jakusko Federal Constituency of Yobe State.
Presenting the urgent motion, Hon. Jakduwa informed the House that on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, Gashua experienced severe natural disasters that left a trail of destruction, affecting more than 2,000 households and resulting in three confirmed fatalities.
The violent storm and flooding wiped out residential homes, telecommunication masts, power lines, and vital public infrastructure, plunging local communities into darkness and isolation.
Highlighting the acute human suffering and economic loss, Hon. Jakduwa noted that “Vital sources of income, particularly in agriculture and small-scale business, have been wiped out, leaving survivors in dire need of emergency shelter, food, medical care, and rehabilitation support. Without immediate assistance, the affected residents of Gashua across the Bade/Jakusko Federal Constituency will continue to suffer severe hardship.”
In honor of the victims who lost their lives in the disaster, the House observed a minute of silence during plenary.
To prevent a prolonged humanitarian crisis and support long-term recovery in the region, the House officially resolved to:
Urge the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to collaborate with the Yobe State Government to provide temporary shelter, psychosocial support, and comprehensive rehabilitation programs for displaced persons.
Direct the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to urgently allocate funds dedicated to rebuilding public infrastructure, restoring local livelihoods, and strengthening disaster preparedness against future occurrences in the constituency.
Call on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) to undertake an immediate on-the-spot assessment of the affected communities in Gashua, while rapidly deploying emergency response teams, medical assistance, and relief materials.
Mandate the House Committees on Emergency and Disaster Management, North-East Development Commission (NEDC), and Legislative Compliance to monitor execution and ensure full compliance with these directives.
