House Plenary Highlights Tuesday, September 29, 2026

On Tuesday, September 29, 2026, during the plenary session, presided over by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, PhD, CFR, the House of Representatives deliberated on several critical issues spanning legislation, national security, budget implementation, and public interest.

Key proceedings included executive communications transmitted by the President. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu transmitted two bills for consideration and passage, which include the National Postgraduate Medical College Amendment Bill and the National Research Development Fund Bill, 2026The President submitted the 2026 Budget Proposal for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Strengthening bilateral legislative ties, the House hosted a visiting delegation from the Parliament of Ghana to foster deeper parliamentary cooperation between both nations.

The defections of Hon. Joshua Chinedu Obika, representing FCT from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to the Accord Party, and Hon. Munachim Alozie (Abia State) from the Labour Party (LP) to the Action People’s Party (APP) were officially announced on the floor of the House.

Furthermore, the House raised Matters of Urgent Public Importance, urging intensified search-and-rescue operations for 116 abducted schoolchildren and others in Borno State, alongside enhanced intelligence and security along vulnerable transit routes (Buratai-Maiduguri Road, Mussa, Lassa).

The House called for urgent intervention regarding attacks and arson in Ilaje/Ese-Odo communities. Mandated the Committee on Special Duties to work with the National Boundary Commission to address border disputes between Ondo and Delta States.

On Bende Ecological Crisis in Abia State, the House requested federal funding and intervention for erosion control, flood management, and infrastructure restoration due to severe gully erosion and flooding.

The House urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to deliver immediate humanitarian relief to communities affected by the Ivo River overflow in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, and asked the Federal Ministry of Water Resources to complete the local dam project.

On unemployment and Youth Restiveness, the House urged the national policy to focus on revitalizing key economic sectors, such as agriculture, textiles, manufacturing, and solid minerals, to create jobs and curb youth restiveness.

The House demanded a thorough investigation into alleged employment racketeering within the Nigeri Agricultural Quarantine Agency, along with a complete review of the agency’s current staff disposition list.

Julius Ihonvbere, CON, this extends the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act from September 30, 2026, to December 31, 2026.
