President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally requested the Nigerian Senate to confirm the appointments of two key officials to lead the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).
The requests were conveyed in two separate letters addressed to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and read during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Key Nominations
INEC National Commissioner: President Tinubu has nominated Retired Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq to represent Adamawa State. The appointment is made in accordance with Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
NAHCON Chairman: The President has nominated Ambassador Ismail Yusuf to serve as the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, citing Section 3(2) of the NAHCON Act, 2026.
In his correspondence, President Tinubu expressed his expectation for an “expeditious” confirmation process to ensure the continued efficiency of these critical national institutions.
In response to the President’s request, Senate President Akpabio has moved the nominations to the following committees:
Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq (INEC): Referred to the Senate Committee on INEC.
Ambassador Ismail Yusuf (NAHCON): Referred to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business.
Both committees have been mandated to conduct their screenings and report back to the Senate plenary within one week.
“In compliance with the provisions of the Constitution and relevant Acts, I am pleased to forward these appointments for confirmation. I hope the Senate will consider the nominees promptly.” President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stated.
