The Senate announced that it will host a two-day high level National Security Summit from October 12 to 13, 2026, aimed at reviewing and reinforcing the nation’s security framework.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement during plenary on Tuesday in Abuja, revealing that the summit will center on the theme: “Strengthening Nigeria’s National Security Architecture: Innovation, Collaboration and Resilience in a Changing World.”
The summit is scheduled to hold daily from 9:00 a.m. at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja. It will serve as a critical platform for strategic dialogue among federal lawmakers, security agency chiefs, policy experts, and key stakeholders to foster inter-agency synergy, build resilience, and formulate innovative solutions to emerging security threats.
Describing the summit as long overdue, Akpabio underscored the urgency of establishing comprehensive measures that will guarantee safety for all citizens, protect rural communities, and restore confidence among farmers returning to their lands.
“The Senate expects to make concrete legislative and policy contributions to address the nation’s security challenges,” Senator Akpabio stated. “This summit will bring together all relevant stakeholders to deliberate on building a stronger security architecture, improving inter-agency collaboration, and building resilience against evolving threats.”
Akpabio urged all distinguished senators and security agency leaders to actively participate and contribute actionable insights to ensure the summit achieves tangible national outcomes.
Following the announcement, the Senate adjourned plenary to Monday, October 13, 2026, to coincide with the conclusion of the national security deliberations.
