The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina as a Non-Career Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of a report presented by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs during plenary. Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the session, reaffirmed the upper chamber’s commitment to due process, fairness, and decisions grounded in verified evidence.
Addressing his colleagues during the deliberations, Senate President Akpabio emphasized that the constitutional responsibility of the Senate demands strict adherence to facts and the findings of competent security and administrative authorities, rather than unsubstantiated claims.

Akpabio noted that the committee’s favorable recommendation was backed by clear clearances. Reports submitted by the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the university’s Governing Council all investigated the allegations previously raised against Professor Fasina and found them to be completely unsubstantiated.
Reflecting on the Senate’s oversight role, Akpabio stressed that lawmakers must act as guardians of fairness and institutional integrity, ensuring no nominee’s career or reputation is damaged by speculation.
He reassured the public that the National Assembly will continue to discharge its constitutional responsibilities with objectivity, maintaining a firm commitment to the rule of law and the overall national interest.
