In a major humanitarian intervention, the Leader of the 10th Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has collaborated with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to distribute multimillion naira relief materials to thousands of residents affected by devastating rainstorms in Ekiti Central Senatorial District.
The distribution exercise targeted victims across Ado, Efon, Ijero, and Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Areas, following a severe storm on February 11, 2026, which left hundreds of residents homeless and destroyed numerous properties.
Represented by his Senior Legislative Assistant, Hon. Gbenga Banji, Senator Bamidele expressed deep empathy for the displaced residents. He noted that the prompt facilitation of these palliatives was essential to mitigate the “trauma and harrowing experiences” faced by his constituents.
“These food items and essential materials are a lifeline to help our people during this period of grief,” Senator Bamidele stated. “It was heartbreaking to see hundreds of buildings ravaged at a time when people were unprepared. This intervention is designed to offer immediate relief as they begin the journey of rebuilding their homes.”
The Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, praised Senator Bamidele’s swift response in approaching the agency. She described his actions as a hallmark of “good representation and deep empathy.”
Mrs. Umar also used the occasion to sensitize the public on disaster prevention, urging residents to:
Maintain building structures regularly.
Plant trees around residential areas to serve as windbreaks.
Ensure proper channelization to prevent seasonal flooding.
Traditional rulers in the district, led by the Ajero of Ijero Ekiti, Oba Joseph Adebayo Adewole, lauded the Senate Leader for his intervention. The monarch noted that the Senator’s refusal to “neglect the victims to their fate” has significantly helped stabilize the community and abate the panic caused by the disaster.
The relief package includes a variety of food palliatives and non-food items aimed at providing temporary comfort to the distraught residents across the four affected local government areas
