Bill Sponsor: Sen. Bamidele, Michael Opeyemi (Ekiti Central-Senate Leader).

Bill Progress: Concurrence

On Tuesday, October 7, 2025 the Senate presented nine Federal Medical Center establishment bills for concurrence. These bills – HBs. 348, 478, 644, 680, 709, 1818, 1855, 1871 and 1191, seek to amend the Act to establish new Federal Medical Centres (FMCs) across various locations in Nigeria.

The primary aim of these amendment bills is to modify the Second Schedule of the Federal Medical Centres Act to legally establish new FMCs in specific towns and communities. This legislative effort aligns with Nigeria’s ongoing goal to enhance healthcare access nationwide by:

Improving Healthcare Access: Establishing tertiary healthcare facilities closer to communities helps reduce the burden of long-distance travel for specialized medical care.

Job Creation: The establishment of new medical centers is expected to generate both direct and indirect employment opportunities for healthcare professionals and support staff in local communities.

Enhancing Public Health: Improved services, research, and training offered at these new centres contribute to better health outcomes for the populations they serve.
