The Senate during it’s plenary session on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, passed the National Insurance Regulatory Commission (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2026, for third reading.
The passage of the bill followed the clause-by-clause consideration and adoption of the report of the Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions on the bill.
The Senate also passed for second reading, the Bill for an Act to Repeal Food, Drug and relate Products (Registration Etc) Act, 2004, and to Enact the Food, Medical Products and other Regulated Products, to provide a Single, Comprehensive Legal Framework for the Regulation of Food, Medical Products and other Regulated Products, Promote Public Health, Consumer Protection, Local Manufacturing, Regulatory Efficiency and International Best Practices.
A thorough debate on the general principles of the bill preceded its passage.
The Deputy President of The Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin commended the sponsor of the bill, Senator Umar Sadiq Suleiman, a pharmacist, for using his expertise and passion to drive much-needed reforms in food and drug regulation in the country and for consulting critical stakeholders like NAFDAC to align the bill with international best practices.
Furthermore, the senate equally considered and passed for third reading two bills for concurrence transmitted from the House of Representatives.
The bills include:
- The Federal College of Education, Dengi- Kanam, Plateau State (Establishment) Bill, 2026
- The University Teaching Hospitals (Reconstitution of Boards Etc) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, to establish the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Erawha Owhe, Isoko North, Delta State.
