Senate Postpones National Security Summit After NAF Plane Crash

On October 6, 2026, The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has announced the indefinite postponement of its two-day National Security Summit, originally scheduled for October 12 and 13, 2026, following the tragic crash of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) ATR-42 aircraft in Ondo State.

The decision was taken in solidarity with the nation and in observance of the three-day period of national mourning declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, during which national flags are to be flown at half-mast across the country.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Leader of the Senate and Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee on the National Security Summit, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, confirmed that although preparations for the summit were fully finalized following successful zonal public hearings, the tragedy necessitated an immediate deferral.

“With the declaration of national mourning, the Senate resolved that the National Security Summit should be deferred until further notice in honour of the victims of the crash,” Senator Bamidele stated.

The crash of the twin-engine NAF ATR-42 aircraft near Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area, Ondo State, resulted in the fatal loss of military personnel and crew members serving in active duty.

The Senate extended its heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian Armed Forces, specifically the Nigerian Air Force and the families of the fallen service members.

Following directives from the President, a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the crash has been ordered to prevent future occurrences.

The Senate assured the public and key security stakeholders that a new date for the National Security Summit will be announced in due course, appealing for understanding during this period of national mourning.
