Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged Nigerians to maintain faith in the country’s democratic future and look beyond current socio-economic challenges as the nation celebrates 66 years of independence.
Speaking on Sunday at the Inter-Denominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja, Akpabio delivered a national address titled “Keeping Faith with Nigeria,” calling on citizens to embrace unity, courage, and sacrifice for future generations.
Drawing from the Biblical Book of Zechariah, Akpabio challenged Nigerians with the prophetic question, “What seest thou?” as a call to look past present hardships and envision a stronger nation.
“Beyond the difficulties of today, what do we see for Nigeria?” Akpabio asked. “I see a peaceful Nigeria. I see a prosperous Nigeria. I see a nation where our diversity remains a source of strength and where every Nigerian can aspire to a better future.”
Reflecting on the country’s democratic journey, the Senate President noted that Nigeria has sustained 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule, a milestone he described as both a divine blessing and an enduring civic responsibility. He emphasized that sustaining this progress requires safeguarding democratic norms through credible elections, resilient public institutions, and leadership accountable to the populace.
Addressing the economic landscape, Akpabio acknowledged the tough measures implemented under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. While recognizing the financial strain many families face as a result of these structural reforms, he expressed optimism that the short-term sacrifices would produce long-term stability and broader economic opportunities.
“Our children are looking up to us,” Akpabio stated. “The footprints we leave behind must not be those of tribalism, bitterness, or division, but of courage, unity, sacrifice, and service to our nation.”
Concluding his address, the Senate President called on all Nigerians to reject division and support their neighbors, expressing firm confidence that with collective resolve, the nation will overcome its current hurdles and build a legacy of peace and prosperity.
