The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D., GCON, has announced the third edition of the National Assembly Open Week, scheduled to take place from July 14th to 16th, 2026.
The initiative is built on the conviction that an open, listening parliament is essential for earning public trust and strengthening democratic institutions. This year’s event centers around the theme: “Three Years of the 10th Assembly: Advancing Transparency, Inclusion and Reform.”
According to Speaker Abbas, the 2026 theme underscores the legislature’s ongoing commitment to remaining accountable, accessible, and responsive to all Nigerians.
“Democracy flourishes where there is openness,” Speaker Abbas stated, emphasizing that public scrutiny strengthens public institutions and ensures sustainable national progress.
The three-day event will features several high-level, people-centered engagements designed to bridge the gap between citizens, the private sector, and policymakers:
-A dedicated platform to deepen collaboration between the legislature and the private sector, focusing on policy frameworks that stimulate economic growth, attract investment, and create jobs.
– A gathering of critical stakeholders to brainstorm and map out actionable legislative strategies to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
-A major national conversation centered on constitutional reforms, specifically the creation of Reserved Seats for Women and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to build a more equitable democracy.
-An interactive session designed to engage young Nigerians on their vital role in democratic participation and shaping the political future of the country.
Speaker Abbas reiterated that the National Assembly ultimately belongs to the populace. The Open Week serves as a direct opportunity for citizens to examine legislative performance over the past year, understand the inner workings of parliament, and offer constructive ideas.
The Speaker warmly invites all Nigerian citizens, civil society groups, and stakeholders to actively participate in the scheduled events and help shape the democratic future of the nation.
