The Senate has scheduled Tuesday, March 17, 2026, for the final consideration and passage of the 2026 Appropriation Bill estimated at N48.472 trillion.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senator Olamilekan Adeola (APC, Ogun West), disclosed this following a special session with chairmen of Senate standing committees. He stated that committees will consider the budget estimates from February 2 to February 13, 2026.
To promote inclusiveness, a public hearing on the budget proposal has been fixed for February 9, during which Professor Wasiu Adeoye of the University of Lagos is expected to make a presentation.
An interactive session between the Appropriations Committee and key economic managers of the Federal Government—including the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu—has been slated for March 5, 2026.
Reports on budget defence are to be submitted by committee chairmen between February 16 and 23 ahead of their presentation to the Senate prior to the planned passage date.
Senator Adeola noted that although the Senate initially targeted March 12 for passage of the budget, the leadership approved an additional week to allow for more meticulous scrutiny. He added that hard copies of the budget have been distributed to members to facilitate thorough legislative review.
The timetable was subsequently adopted following a motion moved by Senator Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central) and seconded by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North).
