The Senate, through its Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions, has launched a major diplomatic offensive to overhaul the nation’s agricultural education system. By seeking strategic partnerships with leading global economies, the Senate aims to inject fresh investment, advanced technology, and institutional reforms into Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

The initiative, led by Committee Chairman Senator Sharafadeen Alli, has involved high-level consultative meetings with diplomatic missions from Malaysia, Brazil, China, Germany, India, the United Kingdom and the European Union.

During these engagements in Abuja, Senator Alli emphasized that revitalizing agricultural research and education is cornerstone to Nigeria’s economic diversification.

“The National Assembly is determined to harness global expertise to boost productivity, build capacity, and create sustainable jobs,” Alli stated. We are deliberately forging alliances with the world’s leading agricultural nations to ensure our institutions move toward mechanization and modern farming techniques.

The Senate’s outreach focused on specific areas of excellence within each partner nation:

Malaysia: Cooperation on palm oil production and agro-industrial value chain optimization.

European Union: Addressing climate change, soil degradation, and food security, building on existing oil palm research interventions.

Brazil: Replicating successes in large-scale mechanization, irrigation, and yield improvement.

China & Germany: Integration of agricultural engineering, precision farming, and research-driven innovation.

India & UK: Focusing on agro-technology, smallholder farming capacity building, and institutional reform funding.

These diplomatic efforts serve as a prelude to the maiden National Legislative Summit and Expo on Agricultural Colleges and Research Institutions.

Date: May 11 – 13, 2026

Venue: International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Oyo State.

Objective: To mobilize international support, showcase cutting edge innovations, and establish a roadmap for the total transformation of Nigeria’s agricultural landscape.

Senator Alli reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to enacting robust legislation that facilitates these international partnerships. He urged the diplomatic community to participate actively in the upcoming May summit, expressing confidence that the event will provide the policy framework necessary to revitalize agricultural institutions nationwide.

Through these reforms, the Senate seeks to position agriculture not just as a means of food security, but as a primary engine for rural development and poverty reduction.
