House of Representatives Plenary Highlights Wednesday, April 22, 2026


The House of Representatives on Wednesday convened plenary, advancing key legislative, security, and policy matters, while addressing citizen concerns and internal parliamentary procedures.

President Tinubu Seeks Re-enactment of NPTF Act

A letter from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on a Bill to repeal and re-enact the Nigerian Police Trust Fund (NPTF) Act was received by the House of Representatives. This executive communication seeks to overhaul the Fund’s legal and operational structures for greater effectiveness. Read more here.

Notice of Defections

Six members of the House of Representatives have announced their defections from former political parties. A breakdown shows that four members from Kano state on the platform of the New Nigeria Political Party, NNPP, moved to the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

They are Sani Wakili, representing Minjibir/Ungogo federal constituency, Muktar Zakari from Tarauni federal constituency, Yusuf Datti representing Kura/Madobi/Garun Mallam federal constituency and Abdulhakeem Ado from Wudil/Garko federal constituency of Kano state.

Other defectors are Chinedu Martins from Imo state and Zamfara state born Kabiru Amodu.

Presentation of Bills


A total of fifteen bills were introduced and read for the first time. These include:

Motions of Urgent Public Importance

Hon. Alex Ikwechegh raised concerns over the rising cost of medicines and called for urgent revival of local pharmaceutical manufacturing to enhance affordability and self-sufficiency. Read more here.

On agriculture, Hon. Bamidele Salam advocated the development of sustainable price stabilisation mechanisms to safeguard farmers’ investments and improve food security. Read more here.

Addressing security challenges, the House urged the Minister of Defence to deploy adequate personnel and assets to Bukkuyum LGA, Zamfara State, and called for urgent intervention in the killings in Kaiama LGA, Kwara State, and surrounding communities.

Presentation and Consideration of Reports

The House received committee reports from the Committee on Population, the Committee on Livestock Development, the Committee on Ocean and Fisheries, as well as a report from the Committee on Special Duties and Aviation, presented by Hon. Frederick Yeiteimone Agbedi.

The plenary session was subsequently adjourned to Thursday, April 23, 2026.
