The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, met with European Union leaders yesterday 7th July 2026. During the strategic diplomatic reception in Abuja, Kalu seeks EU support for constitutional reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
The high-level engagement reaffirmed the strong, evolving partnership between Nigeria and the EU based on shared democratic values. Furthermore, the meeting focused heavily on expanding economic cooperation, strengthening national institutions, and deepening parliamentary diplomacy for sustainable development.

Consequently, the core of the discussions centered on the ongoing constitutional review process. This key legislative exercise is currently being undertaken by the 10th House of Representatives.
While addressing the diplomats, Kalu highlighted 45 Constitution Alteration Bills before the National Assembly. Specifically, these critical bills cover state police, local government autonomy, and extensive electoral reforms. Additionally, they address women’s political inclusion through the Reserved Seats Bill and crucial judicial changes.

As these legal reforms progress, Kalu emphasized that global partnerships remain absolutely vital. Therefore, Kalu seeks EU support for constitutional reforms through sustained technical cooperation and mutual knowledge sharing.
Ultimately, this collaborative effort aims to deliver a robust constitutional framework. This framework will promote security, justice, and prosperity for all Nigerians.
